The point at which you can no longer hold it in. The place where you are sick to your stomach of being nice and trying to keep the peace. The actual breaking point. So here it goes:

1-I was against the purchase of Fernando Torres, but the purchase has been made. I am a Chelsea fan. Therefore, I will support him because he wears a blue kit and I will do so until he no longer wears one. This is a big deal. I embrace you Nando. Welcome to the best damned football club on the planet. Chelsea has plenty of history AND we've got trophies and, with you, let's WIN some more! I recommend a return to the blonde highlights ASAP so that your hair will be sparkly again when you get your picture made with all those trophies. I also think it improves your play and everyone in Chelsea Blue could use a boost. So just do it!

2-People are idiots, and by people, I mean a very large number of Liverpool fans. You burned jerseys when Torres left and called him a traitor? He's a man with a limited window of time to work in his chosen profession and has a family to feed. He also would like to win trophies and, the last time I checked, Liverpool hasn't won anything in a few years. Would I be gutted if Frank or JT left? Hell yes. But would I burn a jersey in the streets? Hell no. You didn't see any Chelsea fans burning Joe Cole jerseys when he left, now did you? Get over it. As for the fans who abused the Pensioners at the Bridge Sunday, it just goes to show you that all that history can't teach you class. For those Liverpool fans who did show some class Sunday (looking at you @melly2508), thank you.

3-It's only a game. Yes I've said it before but it needs to be said again. It was one game. One game does not a season make. The road to glory is a long and painful one in football and, while Chelsea are not where I'd like them to be in the table, there is still plenty of time to turn things around for a solid run of quality play in the EPL. Is the title lost? Possibly, but Chelsea still have plenty to play for - namely, the FA Cup and Champions League. I don't believe Liverpool are in either of those competitions . . .

4-I am officially declaring my love for David Luiz. Frank, you are on notice.

5-PS - I love Real Madrid for winning so effortlessly Sunday afternoon and helping me through a painful day. Jose, you can always make me smile! Thanks to the awesome Madridista @LeslieJ_ for making me smile with her updates. For all the haters (whether you actually watch La Liga or not), you can kiss my a**. I've been a Real Madrid fan for years and I will continue to be a fan for years to come. The season is not over and the Copa del Rey and Champions League are still in view too. Hala Madrid!

Welcome new reader. Obviously, you are a new reader or you would know me a little better than these questions suggest. Allow me to introduce myself and answer your questions.

I am a football obsessed woman. I began my interest in football with the EPL in 2002. My first match via then Fox Sports World was courtesy of a tip from a former client to watch Chelsea. I saw Frank James Lampard, Jr. and a love affair began. From that day forward, I have been a Chelsea fan. There have been many days when this club hurt my heart: the day Jose Mourinho left the club; the day the team lost the Champions League; and every day that is not a win (in that order). Despite my deep, passionate, undying love of Frank Lampard, my love of Chelsea Football Club will remain even if the colour of his kit changes and long after he takes it off. Had Frank left for Inter Milan a few years ago, I would have followed him there but I would not necessarily have adopted Inter as my team particularly since I already had already been supporting another Italian team. Speaking of which . . . .

Since my love affair with football began in 2002, I have expanded my knowledge of the sport by watching other leagues. I adopted Club America and Real Madrid as my teams in their respective leagues in 2005, and Fiorentina in Serie A in 2006. Why those clubs? Club America was another suggestion from a dear friend and former colleague who had been a fan since birth. He introduced me to a different style of football and a young keeper, Memo Ochoa, of whom I have been a fan since that time. I continue to support Club America because of Ochoa and because I love the beautiful game. I watched my first Real Madrid match with friends who were fans of David Beckham and fell in love with the beauty and speed of Los Blancos. I support Real Madrid after all these years because they are an exciting team to watch, because Iker Casillas is the best keeper in the world, and because the players are seriously good looking. I am, after all, a woman. I also love Jose Mourinho and support his clubs wherever he may go (short of a small list of clubs who wear red). My love of Viola is all thanks to Adrian Mutu. I loved watching him play for Chelsea and even the drug charges couldn't make that love die. After his short stint at Juve, his signing with Fiorentina intrigued me so I tuned in. The Italian game was slower, more tactical and, to be honest, initially bored me simply because I could not appreciate it. Prandelli won me over though and I am still supporting Viola because the team has true heart and the fans throughout Serie A are truly a wonderful, welcoming group of people. Last year, I finally relocated to a city with an MLS team and have started following that league as well. This will be my first full season of MLS.

So how can I support more than one team? I love the beautiful game and each of those teams for very distinct and real reasons. If you can't appreciate that, you need not read this blog.

FA Cup Update

Chelsea blew out a manager-less Ipswich at Stamford Bridge. Everyone is delighted to see the team produce 7 goals and see some confidence on the pitch, but given the season so far, no one is ready to say that the team is back to winning ways indefinitely. Glorious to see Super Frankie Lampard back in form scoring goals!

I am in shock. Chelsea lost at the Emirates? What? Did Didi play? Yes. Frank Lampard started again for the first time since August. And yet, no win. A loss. An actual zero point day in North London. How did this happen? Individual mistakes, said the announcers. I'm sorry. Football is a TEAM sport. This team collectively made mistakes and were unable to get the goals needed to win (or even draw).

Here's my painful and thus short analysis:
Didier Drogba is not at 100%. I don't care what the physios say or even what Didi says. There is no way he is 100% and he does not score at least one goal against Arsenal. Frank Lampard's return was welcomed, but he needs more time with the team before he can be at his peak performance (and more time away from that evil toothy woman, IMO). Ess and Mikel both had seriously off games and I don't recall Malouda's name being mentioned except when he was subbed. When the bench call is for Gael Kakuta and, let's face it, Chelsea are not Arsenal so a 19 year old "savior" is a bit absurd, Chelsea fans knew it was over. The team looked tired, disorganized and dispassionate despite all the pre-game pep talk and hype. Arsenal were just sharper and took advantage of key mistakes, something Chelsea used to do with relish. I'd like that Chelsea back now please. I fear, however, they shan't return any time soon.

Has It Really Been Four Months?

I have not had the heart to blog since my beloved's injuries sidelined him in August. Yes, August. Seeing Super Frankie Lampard come off the bench Sunday against Spurs was like seeing the sun shine through massive grey storm clouds - absolutely, breathtakingly glorious! This Sunday, he will start (yes really) against ManU. Don't call it a comeback.

Call it the beginning of the rest of the season. COME ON YOU BLUES!

Injury Update

Chelsea's dynamic duo are injured and out of commission for the international break, perhaps longer. Frank Lampard requires hernia surgery and John Terry has injured his hamstring and glute muscles. Frank played through the pain for approximately 70 minutes Saturday, but was uncharacteristically in poor form. JT played the entire match against Stoke, but also showed signs of pain. While these injuries will mean neither will play for England in the upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers, both Frank and JT may be fit for Chelsea's next game on September 11.

Weekend Recap: EPL, Serie A, La Liga

EPL:

Arsenal started the weekend action, handily defeating Blackburn 2-1. Chelsea was again victorious and still top of the league, yet selfish greedy supporters and reporters started questioning the team's ability to win the league because they didn't score six goals again. Get over yourselves people! Flo Mo and Didi with the goals, so yes it's time to change your fantasy football team already if you didn't buy Flo Mo week 1. It was breakthrough goal weekend for a few forwards. Manchester United won with a Rooney penalty goal and even Berba getting in on the scoring action. Liverpool got their first win of the season Sunday with a goal from Fernando Torres. Spurs and Citeh were not so lucky this weekend, both losing 1-0 to Wigan and Sunderland respectively. Money cannot, in fact, buy you wins. The table is starting to take shape after week three, or is it?

Serie A:

Genoa started the season with a 1-0 victory over Udinese. A few shocking results on the weekend: Roma played Cesena to a draw and Bari defeated Juventus 1-0. My beloved Viola played Napoli to a 1-1 draw, fighting back from a controversial goal. JMV's hair was lovely, but his silliness got him red carded. Tsk tsk darling. As predicted, Ibra was introduced at AC Milan today and Pato rose to the occasion scoring two goals in a 4-0 route of Lecce. Inter play tomorrow and without Maicon who is injured (?) or transferring to Real Madrid. . .

La Liga:
Speaking of Real Madrid, a 0-0 draw with Mallorca did not endear Jose Mourinho to Mr. Flores and the RM glory fans. The defense played well though and those of us who are ardent fans of The Special One know this is just the beginning. Patience is a virture. Barcelona won with new signing David Villa scoring in his debut. Yeah. We all knew that was going to happen. Diego Forlan's abs and the adoracute that is Kun Aguero play tomorrow. Delayed gratification.

Other leagues of interest:
As if I didn't watch enough football this weekend, I caught the second half of the Club America game who played to a 1-1 draw with Necaxa. Still to come: DC United take on Chivas USA. Vamos United!

Overall, it was a good football weekend. A win is best, but a draw will do.

Yes I know EPL games have been in full swing and I haven't been blogging. I'm a bad, bad girl and Frank Lampard can sign up to officially discipline me. . .

Anywhoooo, La Liga and Serie A start this weekend so here I am ready to share my thoughts on the upcoming seasons from the best perspective to have in football - the fangirl perspective.

EPL
Chelsea. That is all.

La Liga
Really Hot Madrid. That is all.

Serie A
God Bless Viola. That is all.

Ok seriously (what? It's late and I'm hyped up on allergy meds):

EPL - Chelsea had a pre-season so bad I refused to blog, so it was with great trepidation that I watched the first game of the season. Florent MALOUDA MALOUDA MALOUDA took care of my angst quickly with his glorious first goal of the season and Chelsea kept going until the score was 6-0. To repeat that score away to Wigan the next week was double the glory. Well that was last season, but the way things are going there's hope for this season again too. My prediction: Chelsea win the league (like I would predict anything else). Arsenal sign Shay Given and finish (SHOCKER) second. This is conditional only on Nicky No Pants Bendtner returning and tearing things up quickly out there. United third. City fourth. Yes Spurs will be too tired from playing the CL games (all four of them before they are sadly retired) that they won't make it back next year. Sorry Uncle 'Arry. Maybe you should speak to someone at the FA about coaching Engerland to Euro 2012 glory. . .

LA LIGA - Real Madrid have the greatest coach of our time in The Special One, the world's greatest goalkeeper with Saint Iker Casillas, the hottest Argie striker at the World Cup with Baby Got Back Gonzo, some greasy dude my mum adores, and the best sparkly manbags with I'm too sexy for lowercase THE RAMOS. Surely they will win everything this season. Alas. The Special One says it takes two years for his teams to truly gel and win anything. With that much sexy on the pitch, opponents will spontaneously combust! TSO and Really Hot Madrid will set La Liga on fire and take back the league. Barcelona second. Diego Forlan's abs third.

SERIE A - Poor little Viola. I blame UEFA. If that person who shall remain nameless hadn't made those horrible calls against Fiorentina, they very well may have won the Champions League. Ok that may be a little much, but not too much. It so could have happened! Now Mutu is banned until October for a diet pill and Jojo, little Jojo, is out for possibly the entire season. *sobs uncontrollably* Roma to win the league. Juve second, because the Old Lady never stays down for long. Inter third. Yes third. TSO is gone. Viola fourth by the will of Gila and Monty and the magic of JMV's hair. Milan sell Pato to Chelsea in January (Roman are you reading??), fall apart and finish out of CL contention.

Speaking of CL, nope. Not going there.

World Cup Recap: USA vs. England

A draw is a win to the US and a horrific, embarrassing loss to England or so the papers will say. Poor Robert Green, the newest scapegoat for the English media. Dear, you have my sympathy and perhaps that of a few others who have been under the unrelenting glare of the British tabloids.

I'd recap the game, but I was so bloody stressed out I need to watch it again to do so. A few brief notes:

-Steven Gerrard was brilliant. Not a statement you will read that often on this blog, so relish it.

-Heskey did a good job. Also not a statement you will read that often on this blog; again, relish it.

-Tim Howard = genius.

-Jozy Altidore had some great moments last night.

-Dempsey's goal was truly a gift he should cherish. Some say it should have been an own goal. I disagree. Robert Green will go through enough without that statistic.

-DeMerit was able to contain Rooney for about 75 minutes or so. If Roo had been let go any sooner, the score would certainly have been different. Rarely will you read Roo praises on this blog. You get the picture.

England and the US go into the second game tied in the group. So long as Algeria and Slovenia play to a 0-0 draw (that is the score at the half as I type this), they will lead the group. One thing is certain. All American anglophiles can release their guilt and return to cheering for both teams unabashedly.

It's just like your birthday for an entire month if you are a football fan about now. I've been overcome with an illness known around the world as "World Cup Fever" which tragically forced me to call in sick today. You too may be suffering dear reader. Allow me to offer some remedies for this ailment:

1 - When possible, stay home watching the football all day, taking breaks to be productive between games; or

2 - If you cannot stay home for an entire month (damn the tragedy!), make sure your mobile phone is fully operational to handle the streaming video or at a minimum the ESPN application to keep you up-to-date on all of the scores as well as Twitter so all of your friends who managed to get off work for the entire month can keep you updated. Of course, you'll also need TiVO to make sure you get to replay all of the games you will have to miss for the evil that is work. Note I do not recommend you stream live games from your work computer. This can (and probably will) get you fired. Work may be evil, but it is often a necessary evil.

And with that, let the games begin! I'll do my best to post recaps as I get time to watch and blog, as I am one of the unfortunate ones who cannot take off the entire month to watch the football.

End of Season Notes: La Liga

Oh the promise of shiny new players! Real Madrid, with all their shiny new stars, were to win it all this season. They were, but something happened along the way. The players needed to adjust to playing together and, for some, to playing in a new league. And then there were the injuries. The season had many bright spots, Gonzo being one of the brightest. In the end, this team played some extremely beautiful football and showed glimpses of the brilliance they are sure to have next season under the new leadership of The Special One. All future Real Madrid games will require a pre-game warning that female viewers may spontaneously combust watching so many hot men on the same pitch.

Around the rest of the league, congratulations are in order to Barcelona on another brilliant season in La Liga and to Valencia for qualifying for Champions League play. Barcelona will be terrifyingly brilliant with the addition of David Villa. La Liga next season - I am already breathless with anticipation!

End of Season Notes: Serie A

What can I say? Thanks to all of those who played a wonderful fantasy league, but you had to know I was going to win this one. Actually, even I would not have guessed at the beginning of the season that my strategy of picking as many Viola players as I could and then choosing based on attractiveness of the player would actually result in so many fantasy points. WARNING: This strategy does NOT work in any other league!

Viola had a roller coaster of a year. After qualifying for the Champions League, Fiorentina shocked many with their brilliant, group-winning play, only to be let down by poor officiating in the end. Sadly, that same poor officiating followed them back to the league and Viola finished the season out of any European play for next year. To add salt to the wound, the beloved Prandelli will take the reigns of the Azzurri after the World Cup, leaving Fiorentina after so proudly leading them over the past few seasons. A new Viola will emerge, hopefully one that still has the star power of Gilardino, Jovetic, Vargas, and Frey. Only the summer transfer window will tell.

As for the rest of the league, I know at least one other team as glad as Viola to be done with this season - Juventus. Bless their hearts. A thrilling end of season show was put on by Inter Milan and Roma, taking it to the last game of the season to decide the Scudetto. Inter made Serie A proud and secured four spots in CL play with their victory over Bayern Munich in the CL Final. Perhaps they got just a spot of Serie A revenge for my Viola too, or so I think to think. Congratulations to Inter Milan for their outstanding season and to all the Serie A teams headed for CL play next season!

A Comment to Readers: Friendship Knows No Kit Colour

Sometime in February, I changed my football world. I gave up blogging, ended a long-term relationship with an online football community, and took stock of just how ugly the beautiful game had become. The game is no longer beautiful when it becomes personal. No matter how much we may love a sport, there is no excuse for not loving and respecting each other first as human beings. As those of my readers who follow me on Twitter are well aware, I am a firm believer in the statement that friendship knows no kit colour. Friendly banter has its place in this game. Hate does not.

I am returning to blog again as a glorious season and the excitement of the World Cup cannot keep me away. Nasty comments will not be published so rude readers, please just stop reading.

Unanswered Questions: Chelsea's Worst Week Since Scolari

If I could interview Carlo Ancelotti, I'd have a few questions for him regarding his decisions this past week. First of all, why start Kalou in the CL match vs. Inter? Granted, he scored a goal (a critical away goal at that) but he's not been on extraordinary form of late and we seemed to be playing just fine without him starting. Next, why did you make Joey Cole run around the entire second half when you had no intention of letting him into the game? And why didn't you let him into the game? Again, his form hasn't been where it once was but he has pace and certainly his style of play would have been a refreshing change in the second half to challenge Inter a bit. No matter. Chelsea walk away with an away goal and the hope they can hold Inter scoreless at the fortress that is Stamford Bridge. Except it isn't a fortress anymore.

Let's turn our attention to today's game. Not since Felipe Scolari have Chelsea been defeated in such shame (a 38 game winning streak gone) at Stamford Bridge. And by defeated, I mean Chelsea beat themselves today. Unbelievably poor defending, horrific goalkeeping, a slow midfield and why I watched the entire 94+ minutes of pain is beyond me. So Mr. Ancelotti, why didn't you replace Obi sooner? Also, why opt to replace Riccy Carvalho with Solomon Kalou? Were you hoping for a wild west shoot out? It didn't happen. The only positives to take from this game are that Didier Drogba worked tirelessly the entire game and Frank Lampard outwitted Shay Given on a penalty which is pretty amazing. And now Chelsea go into the next EPL game with, do we even have 11 players that can play?? I lost count between injuries and red cards today.

All is not lost. Cech will be back soon (can it please be sooner?). We have an away goal in our pocket for round 2 with Jose at The Bridge. It will be a fortress again. We are nothing without hope. Keep hope alive! Chelsea til I die!

Serie A Weekend Recap

If you weren't watching Fiorentina and Roma on Sunday afternoon, you clearly don't love the football. A simply beautiful game, minus the result of course. Fiorentina played a great game, with the exception of that little goal, and I'm proud to say I'm converting the masses to the love of Serie A and Viola. Vargas was, as usual, bloody brilliant and actually scored a goal, only it was offside but. . . . . Fiorentina maintained possession for most of the game, but possession doesn't matter in the end (take note Mr. Wenger) and alas, those Romans were victorious with one swift goal from Mirko Vucinic. Perhaps Gila's new hairdo is bringing Viola down. With the win, Roma move to second place while Viola drop to eleventh. *sobs*

In other Serie A action, Juve played to a draw as did AC Milan. Inter? Oh they won.

A Comment on Six Nations Rugby

Finally, my eyes have been opened to the joy that is rugby. It's rough and dirty and bloody and glorious! I'm taking the Six Nations tournament as an opportunity to learn this sport, so bear with me as I share.

So far, the following things stand out:

1 - A score is called a TRY - huh? Ok. I get it. Sort of. James Haskell had two for England this weekend and Danny Care the other, just in case you wanted to know.

2 - The ball is thrown backwards not forwards as (for the most part) in American football. Ok. I get it.

3 - The shirts are tight and the shorts are short. This is good stuff! Football kit designers, take note!

4 - Rugby players get naked for charity. This is most excellent! Footballers, where oh where are your naked calendars??

Weekend EPL Recap

Chelsea defeated Arsenal, courtesy of two goals by Didier Drogba. This man OWNS Arsenal. It's like he can't help but score against them.

United remained in the title hunt with a thrashing of Portsmouth. Liverpool won and, with Arsenal's loss and a Spurs draw, now stand in 4th place in the league. City stumbled against a resurgent Hull as Jozy Altidore scored his first EPL goal. Yeah Jozy!

The title race is clearly now a two-club one and the battle for the remaining two Champions League spots should prove fierce. It's going to be a fun Spring!

Chelsea Transfer Ban Lifted!

Finally a bit of justice and some good news amidst so much drama - Chelsea have been cleared of any wrongdoing and the transfer ban associated with the Gael Kakuta purchase has been dissolved. I join a loud chorus of cheers of GAEL KAKUTA! and look forward to a summer full of glorious spending!

Goodbye Robbie Keane and Other Transfer Links

January is over and the transfer window has closed.

I am sad to report that Chelsea bought no new players. Carlo Ancelotti threatened to run naked through the snow if Chelsea bought any players in January. The snow is gone and Carlo remained clothed. I was hoping for one big signing for the excitement of it all and, well for a bit of insurance in case of injuries. It was not meant to be.

Earlier in the window, Robinho left City to go on loan to his old club Santos. It's just a loan, but Robinho is already saying he's ready to stay at Santos for a long time. City spent how much money again to get Robinho from Real Madrid? Who's laughing now?

Finally, the last transfer of the day - Robbie Keane goes on loan to Celtic. Certainly, Keane was not starting at Spurs so I suppose it is for the best for his career.

A Comment on Tottenham Hotspur

Some of you who follow me on Twitter know of my recent Robbie Keane issues. These issues led me to start watching Spurs. Although my "issues" with Robbie Keane have been resolved (ok probably not but I'm trying OK?!), I continue to be drawn to watching Spurs, sort of like a moth to a flame. What is it about this team?

Let's face it. Spurs are a fun team to watch most days, most days when they are beating other teams that are not my team and scoring FFT points. Add the continual late goal heartbreak they are currently suffering, and Spurs are suddenly a bit more lovable, even for this Chelsea fan. So what are you waiting for? Get in!

The Tabloids Are Abuzz Links and Such

This week, two of my favorite footballers made tabloid headlines. What is it about the bad boys?

First up, theoretically rehabilitated Adrian Mutu. I say theoretically because this week it was confirmed that he failed a drug test earlier this month. The test indicated a banned substance most commonly found in anti-obesity drugs. Of course, it's not like he needs to be taking Alli so what gives? The stimulants I suppose. Mutu denies any wrongdoing. Hopefully this will just be another mistake by the CONI.

In today's headlines, John Terry has been named as the person having an affair with Wayne Bridge's ex-girlfriend. Gossip Girl would have a field day with this stuff. I could go off on a lengthy tirade on the insanity of it all, including a dissertation on the joke that is the News of the World, but why waste my time? In the end, having an affair didn't stop Kobe Bryant from winning another championship. It won't stop Tiger Woods from winning another golf tournament. And it won't stop John Terry on the pitch either.

Oh my! Who said Chelsea would have trouble scoring goals without Didi? Oh yeah. Me. Sorry. Saturday's game clearly proved me wrong as Chelsea trounced Sunderland 7-2. Wow! The diamond was dead and Chelsea were the better for it. Ashley Cole was unstoppable and set up so many great plays, proving once again why he is one of the best left backs in the world. The other Cole, Joe, played a good game but fans continue to question his desire to make so much money with a new contract when his form has been so off all season. Anelka had a great game and was *this close* to a hat trick.

Serie A was in action this weekend, braving the elements and bringing some lovely football to the hungry masses. Fiorentina was featured in the early game on FSC, in a rousing game against Bari. If you weren't here chatting about it and learning more about Viola, where were you, warming the bench with Juan Manuel Vargas, his hair and Jojo? If so, I'm most jealous. Adrian Mutu played over 75 minutes quite well, scoring a lovely goal. Nacho rounded out the goal scoring for Viola. Not that Gila didn't score; it's just that the official didn't allow it to count.

Juve continue to falter, this week to AC Milan 3-0. After a shaky start to the season, AC Milan appear to have gotten their groove back. I do wonder how they did it. Was Beckham involved?

Of course Inter won and maintain their dominant spot at the top of the league and Jose Mourinho continues to look good. *le sigh* Viola continue to climb up the tables, now in sixth place and setting their sites on Roma (who, BTW, won this weekend too) next. FORZA VIOLA!

Can't sleep either, huh? I know it's that time of year again. The Champions League draw. That annual UEFA conspiracy to ensure that Chelsea and Liverpool fans remain bitter foes until death and that one club is eliminated from the final to make way for UEFA's current club crush. Wait. I'm confused. Chelsea and Liverpool will not face each other this year. What? Well there goes my holiday.

Mid-Week EPL Recap and Weekend EPL and Serie A Preview

Mid-week EPL games produced some interesting results. Finally, Chelsea broke through their slump and earned three points against Portsmouth. It wasn't easy or glamorous, but it was three points. A special note of joy that Frank was successful in scoring from a PK.

Tottenham handily defeated Manchester City thanks to two goals from the lovely Niko Kranjcar and one courtesy of Jermain Defoe. Liverpool also found three points mid-week with a win over Wigan. Arsenal, however, were not so fortunate against Burnley, playing to a 1-1 draw. The table is finally starting to take shape and, interestingly enough, West Ham are in the bottom three.

Of course, Frank Lampard and my beloved Chelsea will take on the West Ham boo boys Sunday. Here's hoping Frank scores many goals to keep those boo boys plenty quiet. The rest of the weekend fixtures appear fairly tame, with United facing Fulham, Tottenham travel to Blackburn and Liverpool face Portsmouth. Finally, Arsenal will host Hull City. Predictions? Not going to jinx it this time.

In Serie A this weekend, my beloved Fiorentina face a resurgent AC Milan. Viola are tired and injured, having played their hearts out and attained Champions League glory by winning their group. The power of JMV's hair is the force to save them this weekend. All hail the power of Vargas and his hair!

Viola played a lovely game against Atalanta today, defeating them 2-0 with goals from Juan Manuel "Good Hair" Vargas and Alberto "Bad Hair" Gilardino. Jojo played, but went off injured early in the second half. No word yet on the extent of his injury. Monty played particularly well today with a couple of great shots and Seb was his usual amazing self. In other Serie A action of note, Roma defeated Lazio 1-0 in a firecracker of a game.

Not really interested in rehashing the horrid officiating, the bad passing and the overall poor performance today. To be a "serious" football fan though, here goes nothing:

The game started innocent enough. Hearing Howard Webb's name as the official gave me pause, yet I remained hopeful that he would actually fairly call a Chelsea game. Granted, he has never called one fairly before, but there's a first time for everything, right? Alas, it was not to be. Webb missed obvious handballs and gave SIX yellow cards to Chelsea players today, only one of which was actually deserved. The first City goal was the result of an obvious handball that was not called. The second goal was the result of a free kick that was, again, a poor call. But enough bitching about Howard Webb. He is an evil man and one day, someone will actually review his work and see that he has never called a game fairly for Chelsea and he will be fired. As you can tell, I'm an optimist.

The real problem with today's game was the poor play by Chelsea. Didier Drogba missed several chances and was offsides otherwise. Anelka's legs did not show up to play today as he was too slow most of the game and the few shots he had were weak attempts at best. Ashley Cole had difficulty all day keeping pace which is saying something considering he's seriously fast. Deco has one good pass and then faded away. JT was not at his best. Riccy had a great save, but made some mistakes as well. Cech was stepping too far outside the goal. Ess was invisible for most of the game. Ballack was off. Frank missed a penalty, the first one he has missed in three years. Seriously. Very few players were "on" today at all and no one player alone could save the game. I don't know if the team is tired, still down over the Carling Cup (get over it!) or what, but City certainly was the better team today and deserved the win regardless of the officiating. Never fear. Chelsea remain top of the league and Karma is, well, we'll just see in May won't we Mark Hughes? And win or lose, I remain TRUE BLUE!

As for the other games, United destroyed West Ham (no surprise there), Arsenal returned to form (sort of) with a win, Villa defeated Hull City, and Liverpool played another game to a draw. That is all.

World Cup Draw Recap & Predictions

My last vacation day and I get to spend it watching the World Cup draw live. Brilliant! I think I speak for every serious woman football fan in the world when I say that Charlize Theron was extremely annoying. This was a stressful and intense moment and she was trying to be cute and funny. Not cool, Charlize. Not cool. Also, because I can't not say it again, Beckham's hair needs to be fixed immediately. This is an international crisis the likes of which we have not seen since the financial collapse of 2008. Someone call a real stylist and get it sorted ASAP.

And now to serious commentary (sort of). Here's how the groups break down and my comments/predictions:

Group A:
South Africa
Mexico
Uruguay
France

I like to call this the "France advances" group because there's little chance of them not in a group this weak. As one commentator put it today on ESPN (shocking I know): "France should go to Vegas right now." I concur. They have luck on their side at the moment. Yet, as another commentator stated "Karma can work both ways." I'm sure ROI fans will be waiting for karma to turn on France at any moment now.

Group B:
Argentina
Nigeria
South Korea
Greece

Argentina should win this group, but Greece could surprise them. I guess it depends on who Maradona actually plays (hint: Gonzo should start always).

Group C:
England
USA
Algeria
Slovenia

England plays the USA in the first match of this group on June 12. The excitement and joy of this group cannot be understated. England and USA should both advance and look seriously hot doing it.

Group D:
Germany
Australia
Ghana
Serbia

This is a serious group. Any group with Germans is a serious group, but aside from that, this group is the second toughest with the likes of Michael Ballack, Tim Cahill, Michael Essien, and Nemanja Vidic. The teams surviving this group will face (most likely) England and USA which should be challenging all the way around.

Group E:
Netherlands
Denmark
Japan
Cameroon

I call this the snooze group. Apologies to the Dutch fans, but only Bendtner taking off his pants can save this group from a total snooze-fest.

Group F:
Italy
Paraguay
New Zealand
Slovakia

Italy should easily win the group and advance. I admittedly know nothing about the other teams. Nothing at all.

Group G:
Brazil
North Korea
Ivory Coast
Portugal

The Group of Death sees three of the world's top 18 teams battling it out for two spots to advance. The group also has some of the world's best players in Kaka, Drogba, and Ronaldo. I see Brazil winning the group and, despite a poor qualifying effort, Portugal joining them to advance. Sorry North Korea, but this clearly is not your year.

Group H:
Spain
Switzerland
Honduras
Chile

Spain wins the World Cup. Wait. The winner of Group H (aka Spain) has to play the runner up from the Group of Death and then possibly Italy and then possibly (gasp) the USA - can you say rematch?! Um yeah. Spain still wins the World Cup.

As much as I wish the World Cup would bring glory back to England, surprise the world with the USMNT bringing it home or even see the Azzurri weeping with joy again, Spain is too dominant, too powerful and, in the end, will defeat the likes of Brazil if necessary to win the World Cup. That is my prediction. When Argentina wins it all and Maradona is crowned King of the World, someone please shoot me. That is all.

Chelsea = TOP OF THE LEAGUE! Ok, I just had to say that. Now for the recap.Chelsea played a fantastic game Saturday, demolishing Blackburn 5-0. Frank Lampard had two goals, including a PK to get back to his scoring ways. Michael Essien's goal was also a sign that the midfield is starting to open up for scoring opportunities again. Joey Cole started the game and it was sheer delight to see his fancy, fast footwork back on the pitch. Love Chelsea or hate them, you have to appreciate the pure raw talent that is Joe Cole.

Spurs lost to Stoke. I still don't understand what happened there.Sunday's big game saw a "resurgent" Liverpool defeat United 2-0. I didn't watch the game, just caught the highlights, so I really can't comment much. I will say this win should secure Rafa Benitez's job for anyone concerned he was on the verge of losing it. And it once again proves that this season is still wide open. For now though, Chelsea are TOP OF THE LEAGUE!!!

Oh my! What a round of CL action, huh? Who would have thought that Barcelona, Liverpool and Real Madrid would all lose this week?

Let's start with my favorite teams. Viola kicked things off with their Tuesday game in Hungary. No I don't remember who they played. The most important facts from this game are: (1) Viola WON; and (2) MUTU SCORED! Oh and, as usual, Vargas' hair was total win.

Liverpool's loss to Lyon was disappointing on two fronts. First of all, Lyon are now at the top of the group. Second, Liverpool losing so many games of late is depressing. I'd prefer a strong Liverpool for the good of the EPL and the enhanced joy of defeating them. No one cares if you defeat a weakened team.

Inter played Dynamo to a draw and, apparently, Sheva's hair was involved. There is talk, talk and more talk about Mourinho and Inter's woes. Well, they didn't lose so I'm thinking it's not all that woeful compared to some other teams.

Speaking of losing, Barcelona fell to Rubin Kazan, one of my new favorite teams, AT CAMP NOU. Wow. Just wow.

On to Wednesday's action where more shockers were in store. I am delighted to report that Frank Lampard finally scored another goal. Let this be the beginning of Lamps lighting up the net! Can everyone please shut up about Frank's "poor form" now? Thanks. Kalou's brace and an own goal gift meant a 4-0 destruction of Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge.

Real Madrid was brawling on the pitch today at the Bernabeu. Pato scored a brace and AC Milan walked away with a 3-2 win that remains controversial. I am as shocked as you that there could be a controversial result in the CL, but there it is. One bright spot for Los Blancos: Raul tied Mueller's European scoring record with his goal today.

In other news, United continued their winning streak with a late winning goal in Moscow. Not going to post anything else about United and Moscow on this blog ever again I hope. Let's move on, shall we?

Once again, the real world and work has taken over my life and my dear blog has suffered. We are upon another international break and here's my quick preview of the upcoming weekend (and mid-week) games:

England has qualified. Bored now. So bored David Beckham apparently has grown a full beard, perhaps inspired by Iker Casillas??

Portugal are on the ropes. Wayne Rooney chimed in this week with a quip that he hopes Portugal do not qualify. Former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo thinks he was joking or perhaps that Rooney does not have such fond memories of Portugal in the World Cup. He's right. No member of England's last World Cup team has fond memories of Portugal. Nor do the England fans.

Speaking of the ropes, Diego Maradona says he is NOT quitting. He may not have to quit. He may be fired.

Perhaps one of the most anticipated matches this round is the Italy/Republic of Ireland match. No I'm not excited just because it will be a pitch full of gorgeous men (and you know of whom I speak), but these two teams have been battling all through qualifying for the top spot in Group 8. Although Italy will most likely take that spot in the end, the Irish will not go down without a fight. Shay Given has spoken. Oh and he hugged Robbie Keane.

La Liga Weekend Recap

Barcelona took down Atletico Madrid 5-2 at Camp Nou. Before the season started, this result might have seemed impressive. Given that Atletico have struggled since the start of the season and they were playing at home, the numbers are not nearly as shocking. Messi did have two goals. Yippee for him.

Real Madrid demolished newly promoted Xerez, 5-0. I'm not sure how, but the announcers felt it was a slow start despite Ronaldo scoring a goal in the first minute. The announcers eventually did, in the words of Jose Mourinho, SHUT UP. It took four goals in the second half from Madrid, including a second goal by Ronaldo and goals by GUTI, Benzema, and Van Nistelrooy (yes he was back and now is injured again). In important defensive news for Real, THE RAMOS has returned to action. Sparkly manbags (again) FTW!

Athletico Bilbao remain undefeated with Llorente scoring a brace and Valencia played Sporting Gijon to a draw.

Weekend EPL Recap

Welcome to the recap!
Saturday saw Arsenal return to winning ways with a central defender (the pasty Thomas Vermaelen) scoring a zinger of a goal and then another and then Eduardo and suddenly, Cesc was inspired and well 4-0 Gunners. Liverpool defeated West Ham 3-2 with Nando getting the brace.

Sunday was Derby day with the much anticipated clash between the two Manchester teams and my beloved Chelsea taking on neighboring Tottenham. The Manchester game was not without its controversy, but what derby is a derby without a little controversy? All I'll say is that karma is a you-know-what Mark Hughes and, if you had stayed away from John Terry this summer, I might feel sorry for you. The game itself was quite a roller coaster. United would score, City would score. I wasn't really even watching and still couldn't help but be wowed.
The London Derby was not as close but had plenty of drama. Spurs came out strong and it was a scary time those first 25 minutes or so, but Chelsea settled down and Ashley Cole scored a lovely header in the first half. Chelsea's defense remained tight and kept the Spurs offense checked while the Chelsea offense really exploded in the second half with goals by Ballack and Didi.

We always wish for games free of injury, but no such luck today. For Spurs, Bassong was seriously injured in the second half. No one wants to see a player taken off in a stretcher and the injury to Bassong looked very serious. Here's hoping everything will be fine and he'll soon be back on the pitch. Didi was also injured in the waning moments of the game and, although Ancelotti has already said CFC will be fine even if his injury means a lengthy recovery, I remain terrified until I know the full extent of the injury. Get well Bassong and Didi!

At the end of the day, Chelsea remain clear at the TOP OF THE LEAGUE!

Quick Recap: EPL, La Liga, Serie A AND Champions League!

I know. So much football to discuss and I've been silent. So here's a quick recap because I'm watching this week's football now.

EPL Recap:
Chelsea won (on a last gasp goal from Flo mind you) and remain top of the league. What else do you need to know? United defeated Spurs, ending their glorious start to the season and dampening their spirits. City defeated Arsenal and everyone knew about it thanks to that rude striker. I will not dignify his behavior by typing his name. I also can't spell it so there. Liverpool won. That's about it.

La Liga Recap:
Really Hot Madrid won and yes GUTI scored a goal. So did Ronaldo. Sparkly Manbags FTW! Barcelona took down Getafe and Burger King. The scoring machine that is David Villa scored two goals and looked good doing it for a winning Valencia. Atletico Madrid played to a draw and are not looking as bright as they did in pre-season action.

Serie A Recap:

GILA! Ok he scored for Viola and his hair was INSANE. And Viola won! Inter won. Most importantly, Lazio lost. Thank you Old Lady. :)

CL Recap:
Two out of three ain't bad, but Gila being sent off for Viola ain't good. At all. Chelsea played a tough Porto team in a massive rainstorm at The Bridge. They looked a bit slow. Perhaps it was the pouring rain. Yet somehow Nicolas Anelka managed to score the winning goal and Cech made some brilliant saves to keep Chelsea victorious. Real Madrid was on fire, then the defense imploded and then the scoring jets rebooted and Real won 5-2. Ronaldo and GUTI scored, along with Captain Raul and the adorable Gonzo. Sparkly Manbags FTW! Fiorentina played a tough Lyon team and, thanks to a questionable call on Gila, were down to ten men for the second half when Lyon scored the winning goal.

Inter played Barca to a draw and Liverpool won. In the easier draws, United and Arsenal both won.

There you have it. And now, on to this week's football.

International Break Recap

I suppose I took a bit of a break with the International Break, so here's to playing catch up.

England qualified for the World Cup thanks to lovely performances by Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard. Yes they can play together. SURPRISE! Oh and Roo scored too! A note to Slaven Bilic and the Croatian National Team: it was not your day and I wish you had been in another Group. I'm still watching you, you sexy devils!

Spain also qualified this week and appear to be back in their Euro 2008 winning form so watch out! Italy are ever so close to qualification as well after this week and the USMNT are at the top of their Group table at the moment. USA USA USA!!!

Romania had a tough week and I am still too upset to discuss it, but they remain a favorite on this blog whether they qualify or not.

Some seriously shocking news: France and Portugal were both in a bit of trouble at the beginning of the week, but managed to hang on mid-week to keep their World Cup dreams alive. Argentina, on the other hand, did not get out of trouble this week. And why? I mean, the team is loaded with superstar talent and yet, Maradona cannot get a win to save his life. Someone save Argentina please! Perhaps the team needs to be saved from Maradona. . . .

The Milan derby was a early treat for La Liga fans this weekend. The game turned out to be a thrashing, with Inter destroying a ten-man AC Milan team 4-0. Gattuso was sent off in the first half after a second yellow from a foul on newly signed Wesley Sneijder and Inter were up 3-0 by the half. Juve took on Roma and Diego's two goals ensured the Old Lady a 3-1 victory. Roma did have a lovely goal by Daniele De Rossi to celebrate, but in the end, Canna's ass wins.

Viola got their first league win of the season, defeating Palermo today 1-0. Viola bombarded Palermo with shot after shot until Jojo scored a lovely goal in the first half. The second half slowed down and Frey had a couple of nice saves to ensure the win for Fiorentina. Mutu made a lovely bench ornament. He must not be 100%. In other Fiorentina news, the club has put in a bid for defender Matthew Upson. Oh lovely!

Hala Madrid! FINALLY! La Liga has returned and the new Real Madrid (brought to you by Florentino Perez) took on a tough Deportivo team Saturday. Which one of the new, expensive, shiny Galacticos scored first in La Liga for Los Blancos? The first goalscorer of the 2009-10 La Liga season for Real Madrid - el Captain Raul! Ronaldo took a penalty shot for the second goal. Deportivo came back to tie the game early in the second half and it was Lass Diarra who saved the day and secured the win for Real. Final result: Real Madrid 3 - Deportivo 2.

A few comments on the new team: There is no denying the awesome offensive power at Real and, it's just a matter of time before Kaka, Ronaldo, Raul, Benzema, Xabi, et. al. are lighting up the net with goals. The weakness continues to be the defense. When THE RAMOS and Pepe are back on the pitch, Real promises to truly challenge Barcelona this season. Speaking of Barcelona, they open the season on Monday.

Atletico Madrid disappointed, being humbled by Malaga 3-0 in their opener. Valencia defeated a ten-man Sevilla 2-0 with Mata and Hernandez scoring. And Getafe destroyed Racing Santander as Soldado scored a hat trick. The excitement of La Liga has returned!

EPL Weekend Recap Links and Such

So I've been a bit slack in my blogging activities. Never fear dear readers. I am back. Let's recap the EPL weekend.

Chelsea once again had the early game at the Bridge, taking on surprise powerhouse Burnley. The first half was a bit tense until Nicolas Anelka broke through just before the whistle. The goal was courtesy of a lovely pass from Didi. Remember those pundits who said they couldn't play together last season? Tsk tsk. Chelsea then opened the second half with two quick goals to ensure an easy victory. Ballack had a lovely header and Ashley Cole had a brilliant little zinger both within ten minutes of eachother to close out the game. The lads are playing some beautiful football. Kudos to the giant Burnley keeper or I dare say the score could have been much worse. Chelsea are once again TOP OF THE LEAGUE. As it should be.

Manchester United defeated Arsenal in a controversial game. I didn't watch it so I can't comment on the controversy other than to say there is always controversy when big teams play and that's why we need better officiating tools.

Tottenham defeated Birmingham City in a closely contested match. Peter Crouch broke through for Spurs in the second half and Aaron Lennon scored a last gasp goal to save the win. The win comes at a high price, as Modric was injured and set to be out for six weeks. Liverpool returned to their winning ways against Bolton with Glen Johnson continuing to earn his keep.

Citeh took on Portsmouth Sunday and not even the lovely that is Niko could save Portsmouth from defeat. Portsmouth had their chances, but Citeh continue their winning ways, even without Carlos Tevez scoring a goal. Yes I am a bitter Fantasy Football Manager and I will find a way to sell Tevez. Everton finally got three points with a win over Wigan. There has been much discussion that the new kits are to blame for the slow start at Everton, but the white shorts are just delightful.

And for those of you in the know: Leeds United continued their winning streak, defeating Colchester in League One. Leeds will face Liverpool in round three of the Carling Cup.

The UEFA Conspiracy Continues

The Champions League draw today proved yet again that UEFA is run by drama queens.

First of all, the draw was held at 5 pm BST. Why? Prior draws have been held much earlier in the day. I suppose UEFA wanted to heighten the drama, the anticipation, the excitement of their "random" drawing process.

The draw itself was full of drama. Between groups being announced, awards were given out to club players of the year in their respective positions. Congratulations to all the lovely winners, even the evil muppet I suppose.

Oh and the reason for the entire event - the draw. Surprisingly, Chelsea will not play Liverpool, yet. Chelsea have a very tough group, drawing Porto (former CL Champions and reigning champions of the Portuguese Liga) and Atletico Madrid (yes with the brilliant Kun Aguero whom CFC should have purchased earlier this summer). Real Madrid will have to play AC Milan and Marseilles in their group and my Viola will face the likes of Liverpool and Lyon. Not to be accused of loving Barcelona too much, UEFA "randomly" put them in the same group as Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan. Why? The drama of course.

Tuesday Football Recap

There are few good things about Tuesdays. They are not Mondays. Yeah that's pretty much all you can say about them unless it's football season. Even then, it's a rare Tuesday to offer much football variety. This Tuesday was one of those rare and lovely Tuesdays that offered EPL and Champions League action. Oh yes let's recap!

EPL RECAP:

Wolves win! The lovely young blonde goal scorer? Andy Keogh. Nice.

Chelsea vs. Sunderland. Darren Bent (no I did not put him on my FFT) scored early in the first half for Sunderland. Despite a ton of shots from Chelsea and some lovely football generally, Bent's goal was enough to take the lead into the half. After Saturday's slow start and Ancelotti's halftime changes, CFC fans were surprised to see the same eleven men starting in the second half. Ancelotti knew what he was doing though. Ballack opened the scoring quickly.

And Deco (yes Deco) sealed the deal with the final goal later in the second half. To shake things up a bit, Ancelotti brought on Sturridge and Sheva (yes Sheva) late in the second half. Sturridge looked brilliant with a couple of shots.

Sheva looked awful. Well, his hair looked awful anyway. He didn't play horribly I suppose, but it was only for a few minutes. So despite conceding a goal in the first half, Chelsea took away a win and three points from the Stadium of Light. Now if only CFC can consistenly play 90+ minutes of lovely goal-scoring football and keep a clean sheet, they might well win the league. If not, I'm probably going to have a nervous breakdown with these second half comebacks.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RECAP:

Oh Viola! How I have missed my favorite Italian team! And what a game! Fiorentina led at the half thanks to an early goal by Vargas. Sporting went down to 10 men with Vukčević being sent off for taking his shirt off in a goal celebration that tied the game. This rule to give a yellow card if a player takes off his shirt in celebration is, quite possibly, the dumbest rule in all of football. Sporting, despite being down to 10 men, took the lead on a great goal by Miguel Veloso. Gila saved the day for Viola, scoring a beautiful goal in the 78th minute to tie the game and give Fiorentina two glorious away goals as they head into the next match at home.

Celtic and Arsenal. Arsenal win 2-0 at Celtic, thanks to William Gallas and an own goal by the Celtic captain. Oh not a good day for Celtic. I imagine much of this match will make its way to Artur Boruc's Friday Rage List.

Wow. United defeat Birmingham. Liverpool lose to Spurs.

I did not watch the United game, so I really cannot comment. As for the second game, here are a few notes:
1 - Pepe Reina is really quite brilliant.
2 - Spurs looked very good. I'm not just talking about Robbie Keane's attractiveness here. Uncle 'Arry has the team playing very well. Everyone eventually has to play at White Hart Lane this season and that is a scary proposition indeed.
3 - Phil Dowd continues his sketchy officiating. It's a sad day when officiating ruins a game. When can the EPL get control over these officials?

A few observations on the season start: The start of the season is not the end of the season. Several excellent teams started out slowly this weekend. It does not mean these teams will not be battling it out in the final weeks for the trophy. Several other teams start out on fire but will most likely fade. Let's be fair here. It's week one. Remember last October when Liverpool were being crowned EPL winners and Villa were playing CL ball? Well that did not happen. It's a long season. I'm just glad it's finally back!

EPL Saturday Recap

Ah, the sweet, sweet beauty that is football on my television! The season has begun!

I have no pre-season predictions as I don't want to jinx anything and, well, I'm a totally bias Chelsea Blues fan so of course I expect my Blues to rule the universe every year.

The Blue started off with the first game of the season at Stamford Bridge against Hull City. Lovely day in London with the sun shining down on the bright green pitch. I so wish I could have been there! The game turned out to be quite a nail biter, with Hull scoring first. Stephen Hunt, no friend of CFC, was the culprit. The Blues tied it up by the half with a great free kick by Didi.

The second half was full of shots, just none that made it into the goal for Chels. The lads kept fighting though, showing great confidence and not giving up until, in stoppage time, Didi finally closed the door on Hull.

A few notes on CFC today: Riccy playing up was a welcome sight. He was all over the pitch today as we have seen him in the pre-season. JT was taking headers more aggressively than I've seen since the days of TSO, another welcome sight. Didi looked strong and appears set to have a glorious season. Ballack needs to stop eating/drinking/breathing whatever it is that is making him so confrontational. Perhaps some yoga and meditation would help? Obi looked a bit slow out there so not sure if he was at 100% fitness. Cech appears to have been hurt in the second half, yet played through the pain. Turnbull has impressed in the pre-season, but I don't think he's ready to start yet. Let's hope Cech's injury is very minor.

Notes on Hull: This team played hard the entire game and kudos for holding Chels as they did. It felt a bit thuggish out there at times, but when Stephen Hunt is on the pitch, I get naturally defensive. Phil Brown's headset is a bit over the top, don't you think? I mean, it's not American Idol. It's a football match.

Notes on ESPN: Thank you for broadcasting today in HD! Thank you for broadcasting more EPL games! Two suggestions: (1) give us a bit more notice and update your schedule, taking out the hunting/fishing commercials please; (2) ladies watch the EPL too and we live for the post-game shirt exchanges. Please do not cut away for ESPN news until the shirt exchanges are complete. Thank you.

So other teams are still playing, but City is up right now and I guess the "experiment" is paying off at the moment. Everton vs. Arsenal should be fun to watch.

UPDATE: Arsenal destroyed Everton 6-1. It was ugly for Everton. Very ugly indeed. Was Lescott even playing out there?

If today's Community Shield was a preview of this EPL season, there are two teams at the top with some work ahead of them. Let's recap:

The first half was like nothing ever happened at United. Nani thought he was Ronaldo and actually channeled him to score a stinger of a goal. Chelsea looked like half the team was asleep for most of the first half. The famed "diamond" appeared to fall apart even with a United defense that was not 100% fit. As a Chelsea fan, I felt a bit of déjà vu, wondering if Uncle Phil Scolari (aka Gene Hackman) was somewhere in the stadium continuing to cast his spell on the lads.

The second half was an entirely different story. Whatever Ancelotti did at the half (perhaps he was channeling Guus?), it worked. The diamond finally started to shine and Chelsea exploded. Ricardo Carvalho scored an amazing goal early on in the second half to equalize the game. Not only did Riccy contribute with a goal, he was literally all over the pitch playing a brilliant defensive game as well. So impressive! On the flip side, Nani continued to channel Ronaldo, this time with diving techniques. Unfortunately, he did pick up an injury this afternoon. While another United player was on the ground, Chelsea continued to play. The rules clearly state play continues until the official whistles play dead. The official did no such thing and Chelsea played on, with Super Frankie Lampard scoring Chelsea's second goal. This led to much controversy but the goal stood. To add to the drama, Wayne Rooney scored a late goal to tie the game.

And then the game was left to penalty kicks. Chelsea vs. United on PKs. Oh now the déjà vu was painful, truly painful. Today, however, was another day and not only did every Chelsea player make their PK, Petr Cech saved two of them. Yes Petr The Great saved the day!

The season ahead looks very promising for both teams. United did not have VDS nor Vidic and still held Chelsea for the entire first half. Chelsea's diamond finally formed and worked. However, United are now plagued with yet another injury and, while their fans may not admit it, Ronaldo is missing on that pitch. Chelsea still needs to play a full 90+ minutes as hard and well as they played the last 45. If Ancelotti can get them there, this season will be full of joy for Blues fans!

Edited to correct error regarding injury: Nani's diving shoulder/elbow/some arm-related part injury did not occur while Lampard scored. Apologies for the error.

Real Madrid Pre-Season Action

Real Madrid, the team that bought 1,000 stars in the summer. Well, maybe not 1,000 but definitely several. Let's review shall we?

Buying Kaka = €65 million

Buying Cristiano Ronaldo = £80 million

Buying Xabi Alonso = £35 million

Seeing Raul outscore them all in the pre-season game against Toronto FC = Priceless.

There are some things money can't buy. For everything else, there's Mr. Perez.

That's right. In spite of the many stars purchased by Real Madrid, there's plenty of "home grown" talent in Madrid, players who have been with Los Blancos from their youth team days.

While John Terry prepares to release a statement regarding his future, Chelsea FC consider filing an official complaint against Mark Hughes and Manchester City for their inappropriate comments regarding the current Chelsea captain. And Chelsea fans are not alone in their frustration with City as the Tevez billboards around Manchester are upsetting many a United fan.

Frank Lampard has admitted to the press that even he does not know what JT is going to do. I guess we'll all find out together when we read the statement in the paper. Ah the drama!

Fiorentina Pre-Season Update: Adrian Mutu

Adrian Mutu is recovered from his surgery and chatting up reporters during Fiorentina's training camp. Mutu says he is not worried about the loss of Melo, claiming Fiorentina are more than one player. He is right. He also comments on his FIFA fine and the appeal. I don't speak Italian so that's about all I could get from this, but it appears to be a quality interview. At least the training pic was lovely anyway.

Didier Drogba and Jose Bosingwa successfully appealed their lengthy UEFA bans earlier this week. Drogs will now face only a three-game suspension and Bosingwa a two-game suspension. UEFA did not issue an apology for the theoretically random CL draw that saw Chelsea face Liverpool for the zillionth time this season, nor for the horrific officiating that cost Chelsea the CL trophy this season. Baby steps.

Pre-Season Analysis: Chelsea vs. Seattle

Carlo Ancelotti's first game in charge and he started young Daniel Sturridge. Sturridge delivered, scoring Chelsea's first goal and breaking free for another shot in the first half. Very impressive indeed! Frank scored the second goal late in the first half and, honestly, didn't seem to keen about it. Perhaps he's jet lagged or bored or both. The defense was frequently challenged, with Seattle having far more corners and free kicks than the Blues, yet the group held together well with JT at the helm in the first half and Ricardo (so glad you are still with us) Carvalho in the second. Cech also had an outstanding save in the first half.

The second half saw major changes. Hilario, who thankfully signed a new contract, came in for Cech in the second half and some of us were feeling a bit of deja vu when Sheva took the field. Although he was not-so-cleverly disguised in a blonde mop of hair resembling Colin Farrell in Alexander, Sheva was all over the pitch and truly looked to be in pre-season form. He missed passes and generally got tripped up at every turn. The rest of the Blues, however, looked great for the most part and Ancelotti appears to have them playing well so far. Then again, it's just a pre-season friendly.

Transfer Rumors Links and Such

Chelsea remain staunch in their insistence that John Terry is not for sale.

Further, the club is only interested in signing marquee players at this time. Here's the "official" shopping list (which I have placed in my personal order of preference):

1 - David Villa
What he brings: Speed, unbelievable footwork, scoring machine, best bitchface in football
Questions: Can he play in the EPL? Don't be ridiculous. Of course he can. Will he? I am not sure if any amount of money will pry Dahveed away from España.

2 - Alexandre Pato
What he brings: Speed, youth, raw talent, best teenager in the world, camera skills
Questions: Can he play in the EPL? I think so. He has so much raw talent and he needs a change in league to build different skills now. Will he? Yes.

3 - Wesley Sneijder
What he brings: Attacking skills, great footwork
Questions: Can he stay healthy? The last time Chelsea had a Dutchman with great footwork and attacking skills, he spent as much time on the bench injured as on the pitch (yes Arjen Robben, I'm pointing my little finger at you). Sneijder looks stronger, but I can't say that he really is considering his injured stint at Real Madrid.

4 - Franck Ribery
What he brings: he's supposedly awesome with "silky skills" on the pitch. I admit I haven't watched much of Bayern this season so I truly cannot comment on his football abilities.
Questions: After saying he only wants to play for Real Madrid, will he be happy even if Chelsea shell out mega-bucks for him? Who knows?

You Can't Handle Analysis

This post is in reaction to a recent comment (which I chose not to publish) bashing my blog for not being analytical and too focused on the attractiveness of the footballers.

Dear Sharon in London, why are you looking for in-depth football analysis on a blog titled LOVELAMPS? There are tons of papers in your lovely city and TV shows galore dedicated to football analysis. Hell, you can even subscribe to ChelseaTV. This blog focuses on the positive side of football. To be honest, there's not a lot positive I can say about Chelsea right now except for the attractiveness of the players.

Case in point: Carlo Ancelotti is the fifth manager in two years at the Bridge. He can't speak English, which was one of the many downfalls of Luis Felipe Scolari. He hasn't won a trophy in Serie A in years where he managed a young, vibrant team with some of the best players in the world (Kaka for example). Yet he's supposed to be the manager that takes Chelsea to CL glory? I'm terrified. Utterly terrified for the new season because of this choice in manager. And don't even get me started on the aging team of prima donnas such as Didier Drogba who can shine in glory one minute but can't seem to keep up the pace through a long season. In fact, the team seemed incapable of playing a full 90 minutes in any game all season in case you've forgotten the many games where the defense were caught napping (Bolton game this Spring as a case in point).

Summer signings? Have you not read ANY football news this summer? Chelsea have none, none worth mentioning anyway. We chose a keeper from a relegated club to sit on the bench, a kid from City that will also probably spend more time on the bench than the pitch and now a Russian left back who was impressive a year ago in Euro 2008 (just ask the Spanish NT how quickly that glory fades). In the meantime, Real Madrid have signed the best players in the world and United signed Michael Owen, a gamble which I am guessing will make Sir Alex look even more like a genius by season's end as he hoists another trophy or two.

Yes I do know just a bit about football. You forget that I'm an American and a woman. While our men's team might not have won a World Cup, our women have won two. Yours? Thought not.

Don't get me wrong. I love my Blues and I'll fight anyone to the death for them. Lately, however, the "analytics" have not been so great for the Blues.

So if you are looking for analysis Sharon in London, subscribe to ChelseaTV. Read one of the bloody papers on every street corner in your city. And if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. That's why my analysis is focused more on the beautiful parts of the game at the moment. And now back to the positive nonsense, just to embarrass Sharon.

It's no longer a rumor. Michael Owen is a Red Devil. In other transfer news, United's other target Luis Fabiano prefers Milan. He's not the only one preferring warmer climates. Frank Ribery has stated he'll join Real Madrid or else he stays at Bayern, snubbing both United and Chelsea. Well, I think Real Madrid FanGirls may have something to say about that. Namely, "stay in Germany you unattractive Frenchman."

Chelsea continue their lackluster summer signings. Wait. Chelsea actually signed someone? Yes. Ross Turnbull was signed on free transfer from, where was it? 'Boro. Oh my. He's not attractive and has destroyed the long tradition of attractive goalkeepers at Chels. CFC FanGirls everywhere want to know who is responsible for this. Looking at you Carlo Ancelotti. And Chelsea also signed Daniel Sturridge from Man City. City, in return, will get cash.

Liverpool fans continue to suffer from rumors that Xabi Alonso and every other Spanish player on the team (and even Argies!) will leave for Spain if given half a chance.

On to Serie A news where my beloved Fiorentina has officially valued each player and the entire team appears to be worth 185 million Euro. Someone want to take out a loan with me? In other Fiorentina news, rumors are afloat the team will attempt to sign Philippe Senderos, along with several other teams.

Confed Cup 2009 Recap

Just a few notes on today's games:

Spain vs. South Africa - very even game in the first half and brilliant play by Spain in the second half to take the lead with two goals in less than two minutes. Then a stunning free kick from SA tied up the game in the 93rd minute. Xabi Alonso saved Spain's day with a goal in extra time, although I think everyone would have enjoyed a PK shoot out. Well, every fan girl in the world would have enjoyed extreme close ups of Iker Casillas including this one.

On to the final where USA took the lead in the first half with two shocking goals against Brazil. Despite the fantastic tournament, it was not meant to be for USA as Brazil came back in the second half, ultimately winning 3-2. Congrats to all the teams for a tournament well played.

With the tournament over, there's just one question left to be answered: will FIFA ban those damn horns?

The US Men's National Team defeated Spain today in the meaningless Confederations Cup. Now being lauded as "historic", a "miracle on grass" and "no fluke," this is one story that will go on and on, well at least until the final. The most frustrating part about following football and being American is not that the Men's NT is general fail, it's the fans. Or should I say the "America is winning so I totally am a fan today, but tomorrow when they lose, I'll forget everything about soccer" fans. After today's game, my phone and Facebook blew up with messages about the US soccer team beating Spain to win the World Cup. And you wonder why I won't be celebrating on July 4th.

On a side note: for those of us who do follow football (the world's beautiful game), today's game was a reminder that anything can happen in this sport and that sometimes, Americans can play football and very well indeed. Congratulations to the USMNT (minus Landycakes - sorry but I just can't no matter how hard I try) on a great game!

Ah justice, where are you? Certainly not anywhere near the UEFA decision makers. Today, UEFA issued a four game ban for Didier Drogba and a three game ban for Jose Bosingwa for making insulting comments to the referee during the second leg of the Champions League semi-final game against Barcelona. Banned for stating the obvious to a clearly biased official. Wow. Chelsea have three days to appeal and they should appeal.

EPL Fixtures 2009-10

Every serious football journalist was analyzing the 2009-10 EPL fixtures so, of course, I am now posting my own analysis. I have no analysis except to whine about the fact that Chelsea has to play United in the middle of the Champions League quarterfinals in April. Clearly, the FA has joined forces with UEFA to ensure Chelsea never win a Champions League trophy. Liverpool, on the other hand, will have their most challenging 14 day stretch in February, ahead of the CL knockout rounds. Convenient.

Ok, enough venting, the fixtures this season look easy for Chelsea in the beginning, so it will be essential to get maximum points for every early game. Actually, the biggest news of the fixtures for next season is that Newcastle play West Brom away in their Championship opener. Other opening day games of interest: Arsenal at Everton. Who did Arsene Wenger upset to deserve this? Everyone will have their own complaints, but one thing on which we can all agree: the new season cannot get here fast enough!

Key matches today and teams are starting to secure their spots for the 2010 World Cup, namely Australia, Japan, South Korea and The Netherlands. Congratulations to the Socceroos, the Orange and other teams!

In European qualifying games, Engerland destroyed Kazakhstan 4-0 with goals by Gareth Barry (I suppose that big contract at City is motivational), Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard. Yes Frankie took the penalty kick and nailed it! In Group 7, Romania obtained a critical win over Lithuania today to keep their dim hopes of qualification alive as leaders Serbia played to a draw with Austria. The Republic of Ireland's draw against Bulgaria keep them just a point behind leaders Italy in Group 8.

In CONCACAFA action, the United States bounced back from defeat Wednesday for a win against Honduras today. Carlos Bocanegra scored the winning goal to keep the United States in second place behind Costa Rica. Mexico continue to languish near the bottom of the table after a loss to El Salvador.

So what does it all mean? The WC qualifying rules are too complicated to explain in a short blog post. For now, continue to cheer loud and proud for your team of choice as every win is critical going forward.

Ancelotti. We knew it was coming, but so soon? Couldn't we bask in the glow of the FA Cup victory for just a few more days and hope beyond hope that Guus would magically stay or Jose would magically reappear? Apparently not.

Carlo Ancelotti. He had quite a career as a player. He's coached some of the best footballers in the world at AC Milan. Will he bring any of them with him to Chelsea? It remains to be seen.

Predictions are out of control as everyone appears to have something to say about the new Chelsea manager's chances of success . Ancelotti himself has set his sights on Champions League glory. Surprise.

And what about the man - appears his love life has a bit of Sven intrigue. Oh dear.

So I guess I'll have to learn to spell his name. For now anyway.

And So It Ends or Continues or Begins?

The season is officially over. And World Cup Qualifiers are back starting next weekend. What? Yes that's right. The EPL ended last weekend, Serie A and La Liga this weekend, and now the national teams go into work mode. As do the gossip columnists who will be on transfer rumor, new manager hiring and baller vacay duty until next season.

So before I start talking about the World Cup or transfer rumors or baller vacays, let's have a season recap, shall we?

EPL - It was a total roller coaster of a season if you, like me, love Chelsea FC. It took an entire summer to sign Frank Lampard's new record-breaking deal, but not nearly that long to replace Avram Grant with Luis Felipe Scolari (aka Gene Hackman). While the season started with truly beautiful football, it was soon evident that Scolari was a brilliant NT manager because he could only put together so many great games and the brutally long EPL season was his demise. Well, that and a few players who did not care for his tactics. Along the way, the ever lovely Joey Cole was sidelined with a horrible season-ending injury. Fortunately for us, Joe was at least able to commentate on a few Chelsea games. Other injuries and losses actually started to pile up and it was soon clear that change was required at Stamford Bridge or CL qualification was in jeopardy. Enter Guus. No one believed that Scolari would be sacked mid-season, but even fewer people predicted Guus Hiddink would take over at Chelsea in tandem with his Russian NT duties. And no one could have predicted how well Guus brought the Blues back to life. Like waking from a coma, Didier Drogba and the rest of the team revived their season, giving United and Liverpool a run for the league, making the CL final (they earned it whether or not they were actually allowed to go is another story) and winning the FA Cup. Guus Hiddink is a hero and legend at Stamford Bridge now, namely because he is leaving. Will he return? Who will take his place? That, my friends, is for another post.

Serie A - Speaking of heroes and legends at Stamford Bridge, Jose Mourinho returned to the football world, managing Inter Milan and taking them to yet another scudetto. Beckham moved to AC Milan to ensure he received his record-breaking English NT cap. Surprisingly, he was an asset to the team and played regularly. Juventus had a disappointing season, finishing third and fired Claudio Raineri. The Serie A season was truly exceptional for my beloved Fiorentina, who will now have a chance at CL play thanks to their fourth placed finish in the league. Roma, despite their excessive hot factor, will not be in the CL.

La Liga - Really Hot Madrid, much like Chelsea, suffered a serious roller coaster of a season. Unfortunately, there was no up side. Juande Ramos came to save Real and, while they put up a good fight, it was just Barcelona's year I suppose. Canna is gone and the exodus will continue over the summer as soon as the buying spree begins. Everything will be shiny and new at Real next season, even Iker and THE RAMOS will be shinier. But again, another post for another time.

Back to the EPL - The saddest part of any season is relegation time, unless you are a fan of a team being promoted that is. The beloved Toon Army must cheer their team in the Championship next season as even sexy Alan Shearer could not save the Geordies from relegation. It was a sad season indeed for Newcastle. On the promotion side, welcome Wolves, Birmingham City and Burnley. Welcome indeed.

Relegation Sunday and the news is not good. West Brom was long gone. Boro and Newcastle were fighting to avoid relegation, hoping Hull and/or Sunderland would take their places. Despite Hull and Sunderland both losing, it wasn't enough. Gareth Southgate and Boro - relegated. Alan Shearer (will he stay?) and Newcastle - relegated. I'm positively gutted for Newcastle. Gutted. Alan Shearer is too sexy for the Championship.

EPL Weekend Recap - At the Top

What can I say? It was one roller coaster of a season! Congrats again to United (did I congratulate them?) for winning the league. Yawn.

In October, someone (namely every announcer on the planet) was screaming that this was Liverpool's season to win the league. It was f**king October and they were all wrong. Liverpool ends the season in second place which is respectable, but no trophies. None.

Chelsea started the season playing truly beautiful football. And then it got ugly. Painfully ugly. A change in manager turned the team around and the beautiful game was back again. Despite another CL quarterfinal against Liverpool and winning the semifinal against Barcelona, Chelsea will not be playing Wednesday in Rome. UEFA conspiracy? Of course darling. But, let's refocus. The EPL season ends with a win and the team look strong heading into the FA Cup Final next week. Guus, you have made a difference and we love you for it! Ashley Cole gets a well-deserved goal today. And congratulations to the lovely Nicolas Anelka for winning the Golden Boot! Another season sets to end, one trophy in the case and Chelsea are still battling for another trophy!
